It's Banned Books Week!
Every year during the last week of September, libraries and bookstores around the country raise awareness about censorship by holding events and putting up displays featuring books that have been challenged or banned in the U.S.
This year, Banned Books week runs through October 2 and you can see if there are any events in your area here
Some of the notable books banned in the past include To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger and The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Recent challenges include Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The American Library Association, one of the sponsors of Banned Books week, points out that "The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections. Imagine how many more books might be challenged—and possibly banned or restricted—if librarians, teachers, and booksellers across the country did not use Banned Books Week each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society."
Let's exercise our First Amendment rights and read a banned book! What are some of your favorites you know have been challenged in the past? Which banned books are among your favorites of all time?
Happy reading!
