BlueNote Undergraduate Reading

On February 10th at 6:00 p.m. Northwest Boulevard, EWU's undergraduate literary magazine, will be hosting a reading at Neato Burrito. If you want to hear emerging local talent, come on down to listen. If you're an EWU undergraduate and have a poem, short story, or a creative essay to share with the world, email Erin Ormsby at nwblitmag@gmail.com. This is a great opportunity for students to share their poetry or prose pieces with an audience outside the typical EWU community. (You don't have to be an English major to read - all students are welcome!)

Even if you don't want to read, you should still attend BlueNote and discover the range of Eastern's undergraduate creative writing talent while enjoying some yummy burritos (Neato Burrito has veggie and vegan options).

Renee D'Aoust Reading

Sandpoint, Idaho's own Renee D'Aoust will be reading from her memoir Body of a Dancer at Auntie's Bookstore. Her book brings light upon the art of ballet and modern dance and explores the toll it takes upon the mind and body.

One reviewer stated that D'Aoust's book shows “a remarkable clear-eyed descent into New York’s surreal world of modern dance, peopled by the obsessed, dispossessed, sexy, suicidal, brutal, broke and absurd.”

D'Aoust's prose, poetry, and journalism has appeared in many different publications, including The Black Canyon Quarterly, Drunken Boat, Mid-American Review, North Central Review, Notre Dame Review, and many others. She is currently a professor at North Idaho College and volunteers as an Idaho Master Forest Steward.

Charles Dickens's 200th Birthday Celebration

Did you read Oliver Twist in school? Great Expectations? A Tale of Two Cities? Charles Dickens is well known for his iconic novels and characters. Come learn more about him through many different events held at the Tinman Gallery supporting a month long celebration of Charles Dickens 200th Birthday.

The celebration includes a high school and adult writing competition, answering the question "What character should have appeared in a Dickens's novel, but didn't?" in 500 words or less. Winners will receive $50 cash, a Tinman Gallery gift certificate, and will be asked to read at the Leap Day Celebration on Wednesday, February 29th 2012 at 7:00 PM.

On Tuesday, February 7th 2012 at 7:00 PM Beth Torgerson, an Eastern Washington University professor and Victorian Literature specialist, will hold a discussion of Dickens's work and life. There will be cake and tea!

On Saturday, February 11th 2012 at 1:00 PM Rebecca Cook, a professional storyteller and actor, will dramatize A Boy Called Dickens by Deborah Hopkinson and John Hendrix. A Boy Called Dickens is a children's book that explores Charles Dickens's childhood and how he became a writer. There will be treats!

On Wednesday, February 29th 2012 at 7:00 PM at the Blue Door Theatre, the winners of the writing competition will read their essays and be awarded with their prizes. The winning essays will also be performed by Blue Door players.

Nonfiction Book Club: T.R. Reid's "The Healing of America"
