Poem of the Week by Russell Thorburn

Standing in Bernie's Driveway with
the Garage Door Open

The night teaches us to be children,
to laugh at the slap-happy way
we smack the back of our necks
for biting mosquitoes.

When the bat almost kisses my cheek,
we have already located Europa.
We shuffle through the stars by eye,
then my turn at the telescope,

I see fireflies above the tree line,
dizzy from the earth, as they imitate
multiple moons. Maybe we ghost up
from a speaker in the garage,

what we love or hear can never be
that close, even when the lens
is fixed, twisted to hold a round surface
billions of miles away.
