Opportunities for Writers

Wow! What a long list of opportunities! Please check the deadline dates as some are fast approaching!

Blood and Honey Review is a new literary magazine supported by the American University of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its mission is to promote a vibrant literary life in the Balkans and at the university by connecting writers and artists from the Balkans to the world, and promoting writers and artists from the world in the Balkans. They will publish fiction, poetry, and essays twice a year online (January and June), with a printed anthology distributed once a year in bookstores throughout the Balkans (June). The writers guidelines are posted and their is no specified deadline for submission.



Muse and Stone is a literary journal published by Waynesburg University each spring. Half of each journal is drawn from unsolicited submissions; the other half is dedicated to work by Waynesburg University students. They are currently accepting submissions for their Spring 2011 issue. Simultaneous submissions are accepted. Include cover letter and SASE response only. Send up to 5 poems, or 6,000 words of fiction or creative nonfiction to: Muse & Stone, Waynesburg University, Buhl Hall, 51 W. College St., Waynesburg, PA 15370 or at muse&stone@waynesburg.edu. The deadline for submission is April 1.




Now in its 37th year, CutBank Literary Magazine is once again looking for great work to publish in issues 74 and 75. Through February 28, they're welcoming original, unpublished works of poetry, fiction, and literary nonfiction from established and upcoming writers alike. They are always excited to feature new writers and are happy to announce that they're now accepting online submissions!




Additional Contests and Opportunities for Writers:

Salem College's 2011 International Literary Awards include the Reynolds Price Short Fiction Prize (Judge: Michael Parker); the Rita Dove Poetry Prize (Judge: Alison Joseph); and the Penelope Niven Creative Nonfiction Prize (Judge: Meghan Daum). Guidelines are posted online. Deadline: February 10.

Fourth Genre seeks the best creative nonfiction essay/memoir for the seventh annual Michael Steinberg Essay Prize. Authors of previously unpublished manuscripts in English are encouraged to enter. The award amount is $1,000 for 1st Prize. Winning and runner-up entries will be published in an upcoming issue of Fourth Genre. Judge: Ryan Van Meter. Reading fee is $15 and word limit is 6,000 words; long submissions will not be read. Guidelines are online. Deadline is February 28.

Omnidawn Poetry Chapbook Contest will award the winner a prize of $1,000, publication by Omnidawn Publishing and 100 author copies will be given annually for a poetry chapbook. Elizabeth Robinson will judge. Submit a manuscript of 20 -30 pages with a $15 entry fee. Visit the website for complete details. Deadline: February 28th.

The coordinators of Tin House Summer Writers Workshops are pleased to announce they will be awarding both full and partial scholarships for the 2011 Tin House Summer Writers Workshops, July 10 - 17 at Reed College, Portland, OR. Partial scholarships cover either tuition or food and lodging. All scholarship recipients will need to provide for their own transportation to and from the workshop. The final decisions are made based on the merit of the writing sample alone. Final postmark deadline for scholarship applications in March 14, 2011. Winners will be notified by phone and email no later than May 16, 2011. Apply at their website.

Byrdclyffe Arts Colony offers a one-month residency for artists, writers, and composers. Beautiful, historic setting, secluded yet close to the Village of Woodstock. Private room and studio space in a rustic turn-of-the-century inn. Access to galleries, performances and hiking. Four week sessions from June - September. Apply online or check this site for more information. Deadline is March 1.

And last but certainly not least: The 2011 Bread Loaf Writers' Conference will be held from August 10 - August 20 in the Green Mountains of Ripton, Vermont. The conference includes lectures, craft classes, meetings with editors and agents, readings by faculty and guests, and workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. The 2011 faculty will include poets marianne Boruch, Linda Gregerson, Jane Hirshfield, Yusef Komunyakaa, Carl Phillips, Alberto Rios, and David Rivard; fiction writers Andrea Barrett, Lan Samantha Chang, Stacey D'Erasmo, Percival Everett, Aleksandar Hemon, Amy Hempel, Margot Livesey, Kevin McIlvoy, Jim Shepard, and Helena Maria Viramontes; and creative nonfiction writers Tom Bissell, Jane Brox, and Rebecca Solnit. The deadline for financial aid is March 1; March 19 for general admission.
