Ariana Franklin started out as the youngest reporter for a Devonshire newspaper called Fleet Street. As she grew older, she fell in love with women's historical novels and she became a specialist on the early Middle Ages. Franklin, who sadly passed away earlier this year, believed that if a reader was going to buy a book, then the writer should make the book as well researched and real as possible. So research is what she did. She went on to win the 2007 CWA Ellis Peters Historical Award and the Crime Writer's Association 2010 Dagger in the Library Award. The Literary Freedom Book Club will be discussing Mistress of the Art of Death, the first book in the series of the same name featuring 12th century pathologist Adelia.
The New York Time Book Review states that her book, Mistress of the Art of Death, is "A morbidly entertaining novel that outdoes the competition in depicting the perversities of human cruelty. . . Franklin makes a good case for restoring the reputation of Henry II."
